Concert Report: Friends and Patrons Concert

Tagged , , , , , ,

“In collaboration with cellist Duncan Strachan, Reverie presented an innovative programme of music for choir and cello at the Swiss Church on June 4th. Entitled ‘A Farewell to Arms’, the concert explored a number of the musical possibilities created by the synthesis of cello and voices. This ranged from the atmospheric wailings of the cello in John Tavener’s ‘Syvati’, to the cello interacting with the choir, taking on the dramatic role of the old soldier in Richard Rodney Bennett’s ‘A Farewell to Arms’ – a particularly fitting piece to perform on this date, marking the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

The concert featured two world premieres, the first ‘A Song of Enchantment’ by Reverie’s Associate Composer, Toby Young. The piece, which was also for choir and cello, set Walter de la Mare’s evocative text for choir only until the end, when the cello’s scherzo was accompanied by a shifting harmonic progression in the choral parts. The second premiere was Owain Park’s piece ‘The Mother of God’ – the winner of Reverie’s Young Composers Competition, in partnership with the international publishing company, Edition Peters Ltd.

Reverie is proud to play a key role in the composition and performance of new and exciting music, and is delighted that this concert featured the music of three living composers.”
