Reverie is delighted to present its second annual Friends and Patrons Concert at the beautiful Swiss Church in Covent Garden, London.
In this programme, featuring exciting young cellist Duncan Strachan, Reverie draws out the fresh musical colours of these works, emphasising the melancholic combination of solo cello with the sonority of voices. John Tavener uses the wail of the cello, matched with the drone of the choir’s basses, to evoke the Orthodox tones for which he is so famed. Richard Allain highlights the technical capabilities of the cello to create new textures, in which the sound of the instrument blends and merges with the tone of the choir to create an entirely new timbre. In ‘A Farewell To Arms’, Richard Rodney Bennett sets the poetry of Ralph Knevet (17th century) and George Peele (16th century) and their mediations on the homely life after years spent soldiering. The cello here can be heard to serve as the ‘voice’ of the old soldier, which is particularly poignant as 2014 marks the 100-year anniversary since the start of the First World War.
We are also proud to showcase two world-premieres in this concert. The first from Toby Young, again for choir and cello, with a setting of Walter de la Mare’s poem, ‘A Song of Enchantment’. Toby is Reverie’s Associate Composer and it is a huge pleasure for us to continue our collaboration with him. Secondly, we give the debut performance of Owain Park’s piece ‘The Mother of God’ – the winning entry in Reverie’s Young Composers Competition in association with the international publishing company, Edition Peters Ltd.
